Administrative / biographical background:

The business was begun sometime before 1733, and had been purchased by Thomas White in 1816. His son Daniel (who had previously been a miller at Sidley and Ninfield) took over the business in 1852. Both Thomas and Daniel held the post of stamp distributor, a post which lapsed on the death of Daniel in 1889. Daniel's son Josiah John joined the firm in 1863 and his son Harry in 1893

In 1931 the grocery and drapery business was split; Harry continued with the grocers shop and his brother Reginald took over the drapery business. Harry White sold the grocery business in 1946

The shop was situated in a large tudor building in Market Square, Hailsham, and was built on the site of Sheriff Place
